Words that Make a Difference

I’ve been hesitant to start a blog because I was afraid I might fall into a spiral of unmitigated navel-gazing that’s stereotypical of us introspective artistic types. But then I realized what inspires me about writing is the power that words have to change lives. Words can inspire, validate, and encourage. An ordinary word spoken in kindness is a balm to the soul. Most of us don’t realize the power we have to lift someone else’s spirits, but those of us who work in professions where we meet a lot of strangers understand that connection, and I believe it’s what makes our jobs meaningful. Stopping to notice the small interactions between people makes me appreciate how rich the human experience can be. As Socrates says in the movie Peaceful Warrior, “there’s never nothing going on.” But, since I spend a lot more time writing at home these days, I don’t have as much of a chance to exercise my verbal skills.

People have told me I have a gift for encouraging others. That’s one of the reasons I write at all, because I want to cause the people I touch through my writing to think deeply about their own experience, to grow richer, stronger, and truer through the journey of reading, and maybe discover something about themselves they didn’t know or couldn’t see before.

So I’ve decided this blog should be about words that make a difference. I’m an organic writer, and inspiration for writing comes from all different sources, people, places, things (often really random and silly things). I want to share how I see these random details and how they coalesce in my strange and enigmatic brain into hopefully, something beautiful and inspiring. And I want you to be a part of it.

So buckle up and get ready for the ride. We’re going on a journey!
